This book is a practical guide to women’s mental health from adolescence through old age written for the general public by a practicing psychiatrist who experienced her own struggles with depression and grief. Based on 30 years of treating adolescent and adult patients, teaching, and research, she helps women learn to survive and thrive. Her personal experience has given her a sense of mission, deepened her understanding, and enhanced her ability to communicate. Here she translates psychiatric knowledge into guidance for all women.
The book focuses on issues and disorders that are unique or more common in females. Chapters cover each stage of a woman’s life, and describe depression and grief, premenstrual disorders, postpartum depression, menopause, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Each chapter begins with an illustration drawn from clinical practice or personal experience, then discusses each topic and highlights its expression in women. Specific strategies are given for maintaining good mental health, as well as effective treatments for psychiatric problems. Each chapter ends with suggested readings and websites for further information appropriate for the general public.
Women need this unique book because many are struggling and confused about which way to turn for help, or if they should even seek help. Family and friends may also find ideas on how to understand and help the women in their lives. At every age, women have vulnerabilities. This book will guide them toward practical solutions.
